The Universal Periodic Review takes place in Geneva.

Thank you, Madam President,

The United Kingdom welcomes St Kitts and Nevis’ engagement with the UPR process and its approach to human rights, noting the parliamentary elections which took place in June of this year and were assessed as free and fair by CARICOM’s election observers.

The UK welcomes the accession of St Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment and we urge St Kitts and Nevis to ensure its correctional system meets international human rights standards.

We recommend that St Kitts and Nevis:
1. Develop a national strategy or action plan to support implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 8.7 which calls for the eradication of forced labour, modern slavery and human trafficking by 2030 and was agreed by all UN Member States in 2015.
2. Adopt an open, merit-based process when selecting national candidates for UN Treaty Body elections.
3. Enact comprehensive anti-discrimination legislation which will specifically prohibit discrimination and violence based on sexual orientation and gender identitiy.

Thank you, Madam President.
