Ms Garnham added: “Tonight’s vote means more children going without and more desperately anxious parents – just as a coronavirus winter approaches.

“In short, it ducks our moral responsibility to protect the country’s most valuable children.”

However, a wave of restaurants, cafes and councils joined Mr Rashford’s campaign to prevent children going hungry, pledging to feed them for free during the holidays.

Mr Rashford said he was “blown away” by the outpouring of offers of free meals for the most vulnerable, saying: “Selflessness, kindness, togetherness, this is the England I know.”
