Meghan Markle, 39, and Prince Harry, 36, want to raise their son Archie Harrison, one, out of the public eye. The Sussexes moved into a mansion in Santa Barbara’s upscale neighbourhood of Montecito in the summer and are expected to remain there for the foreseeable future.
Archie was born in the UK but has dual nationality and is both a British and US citizen.
When Meghan and Harry first announced their plans to quit the Royal Family in January they outlined their wish to split their time between North America and the UK going forward.
They relocated to the States with Archie in March following their step down as senior royals.
The coronavirus pandemic has since scuppered any plans the Sussex family may have had to return to Britain.

Not only were Meghan and Harry expected to attend Royal Family events including Princess Beatrice’s wedding and Trooping the Colour over the summer but they were also understood to have accepted an invitation from the Queen to stay with her and Prince Philip at Balmoral.
As COVID-19 has made Transatlantic travel impossible, Archie has not been in Britain since November last year.
The young royal left the UK with his parents ahead of Christmas 2019, which they decided to spend in Canada.
While Meghan and Harry both returned to Britain to announce their bombshell decision to quit and to wrap up royal duties in March, they left their son Archie behind in the care of friends and a nanny on both occasions.
As things currently stand it seems likely Archie will spend most of his childhood Stateside.
If Archie chooses to split his time between different countries then he may never meet the requirement of being a US resident for 14 years.
Will Meghan Markle run for president?
While Meghan has not explicitly aligned herself with one political party, some commentators have claimed she is lining herself up to be a Democratic candidate.
Meghan is a longterm campaign for issues including women’s rights and racial equality and has previously shared platforms with high profile democrats.
Since stepping down as a senior royal Meghan has given several powerful speeches on pressing issues close to her heart.
Reacting to Meghan’s speech at the UN’s Girl UP summit earlier this summer, one royal commentator flagged her credentials for becoming president.
Expert Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk at the time: “Meghan has always been an activist since she successfully campaigned against a sexist advertisement when she was 11.
“In 2015 she made a memorable speech on gender equality to the United Nations Women’s Conference. Her speech by video link to the UN-sponsored leadership campaign, Girl Up, was intended to inspire her audience.
“It was about organising to change things radically, alter power structures and not only have a debate about equality but be in charge of it.”
He added: “There is no doubt whatever that this is the sort of speech that would fit perfectly if aimed at a political audience.
“There has always been speculation that this area attracted her, this has fuelled these rumours and as I listened to the speech I thought that it might well be a rehearsal for others on a far bigger stage.
“She has the talents and the experience in the public eye to be a Democratic Party candidate at some point in the future. Her status as a royal has given her a huge global profile.
“She might well use it to further her message and help shape the debate in the corridors of power herself.”
