Another key manifesto moment for the Conservatives was an attractive pledge to recruit an extra 50,000 nurses into the NHS and the promise of building 40 new hospital in an effort to roll out an additional 50million GP appointments.

Inevitably, the NHS has been suffering due the coronavirus pandemic and these ambitious targets have been put on the back burner.

The recruitment of 50,000 nurses, however, remains a priority, with Chancellor Rishi Sunak saying the “core health budget” would receive an extra £6.6billion boost to deliver on the targets.

In July, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said 6,000 more doctors and 12,000 extra nurses were in the NHS compared to one year ago today and said the Government was well on its way to meeting the target.
