Chris Whitty has strongly advised against “hugging and kissing” elderly relatives at Christmas.

The Chief Medical Officer admitted that it wouldn’t be illegal for Britons to do so, but said it would “make no sense”.

This is because grandparents tend to be highly susceptible to the coronavirus.

He told a briefing: “Would I want someone to see their family? Of course, that’s what Christmas it about.

“But would I encourage someone to hug and kiss their elderly relatives? No, I would not.

“It’s not against the law, that’s the whole point, you can do it within the rules that are there.

“But it does not make sense because you can be carrying the virus.”
