On Sunday, a further 1,040 people tested positive for coronavirus and registered another day where cases have tipped over 1,000. The new number now takes the UK’s total cases to 317,379 and comes two weeks after Boris Johnson warned of a second wave of the virus hitting the country in a fortnight. On Saturday, the UK also registered a further 1,012 cases and was followed by Friday’s total of 1,441 – the biggest one-day rise in two months. With the lockdown restrictions largely lifted, the number of cases has begun to rise with several areas placed into local lockdowns.
While the UK’s case total has begun to increase, the number of deaths has remained low.
On Sunday, a further five were reported over the last 28 days after registering a postive test, taking the total to 41,366.
Due to the rise in cases, fears of further local lockdowns have increased across multiple towns in the north and Midlands.
There are among 20 towns and cities in Greater Manchester, Lancaashire, West Yorkshire and Leicestershire on the Government’s red list.
Local lockdowns remain in Blackburn with Darwen and Leicester due to infection rates standing at 77.9 and 56.3 per 100,000 respectively.

7.41am update: Japan suffers worst economic contraction
The country has recorded the worst economic contraction in modern times according to the government’s data.
Between April and June, GDP fell a record 7.8 percent.
Equating to an annual rate, this registers a 27.8 percent contraction.
7.24pm update: Fears of second wave spike
Two weeks after Boris Johnson’s warning of a second wave, cases in the UK have continued to surge across the country.
On Sunday, 1,040 cases were registered in the last 24 hours taking the total to 317,379.
Saturday’s 1,012 new cases was the highest rise on the day in eight weeks.
Friday also saw a further 1,441 positive cases – the largest in two months.
