Cases of coronavirus are continuing to spike across the UK, with officials closely monitoring key areas. The North of England in particular is at a tipping point, with the latest data showing several areas with increased cases.
One study of the pandemic in England has found coronavirus cases are doubling about twice as fast in the North West, Yorkshire and the West Midlands as for the whole of England.
This was the largest COVID-19 study of its kind, undertaken by React, and found the rate of growth of the epidemic across England has slowed in the last month, but the country was now at a “critical point in the second wave”.
On Friday, the UK recorded an increase of 13,864 cases and 87 deaths.
This brings the number of coronavirus cases across the UK to 575,679 since the pandemic began, with a total of more than 42,000 who have died within 28 days of a positive result.

Next is Oldham, with 2,246.2 cases per 100,000 followed by Blackburn with Darwen with 2,216.5.
Leicester is also high on the list, with 2,190.7 cases per 100,000, followed by Manchester with 2,144 and Liverpool with 2,081.6.
Professor Steven Riley from Imperial College London said there was evidence of “continued growth and possibly rapid growth” in regions such as the North West, Yorkshire and the West Midlands but the key message across England was that “prevalence is high”.
He added: “Prevalence is going to continue to go up unless either compliance with the messaging improves, or additional measures are introduced that are supported by the general public.
“There is a very strong epidemiological case for trying to reduce the transmission right now.”
