Pictures have emerged this morning of the first lorries passing through the Port of Dover in Kent.

Trade between the UK and mainland Europe had been blocked since Sunday night after French authorities closed the border in the wake of a new strain of COVID-19 being identified in Britain.

The Government and officials in Paris reached an agreement on Tuesday evening to allow journeys to continue if drivers had produced a negative coronavirus test.

Traffic can once again begin to slowly move but it is expected to take days to clear as the Road Haulage Association estimate up to 10,000 HGVs could be caught up in the delays in the Kent area.

This is a developing news story, more to follow.
