The announcement that the Queen and Prince Philip have been given the coronavirus vaccine has sparked questions over the future involvement of other royals. Buckingham Palace confirmed last week that Her Majesty and her husband had been given their first doses, despite typically being reticent to share private medical information. HeirPod host Omid Scobie and ABC News foreign correspondent Maggie Rulli discussed why Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William would be good choices for a televised vaccination.

Mr Scobie told listeners: “It will be really interesting to see, as this sort of trickles down to other groups, will we hear from Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall when they have their vaccination?

“We could possibly have the cameras with the Cambridges much later in the year when younger people have access to the vaccine.

“It will be interesting to see how this plays out.”

Ms Rulli agreed, going on to explain why it would be important for younger Britons to see Kate and William go for their doses.

She said: “When we first started talking about vaccines, we did some pieces at ABC just about public perception of them.

“I went out and spoke with some people, and just asking their opinion on the vaccine and if they would take it.

“I was blown away by how many young people who said that they were cautious about the vaccine and didn’t feel comfortable taking it.

“So I feel that this isn’t something that is going to go away.”

As the Queen and Prince Philip are 94 and 99 respectively, they qualified for their jabs.

According to a Buckingham Palace spokesperson, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh received their vaccinations on January 9.

It is rare for the royals to issue an announcement commenting on private health matters.

However, the monarch will not reveal which vaccine she was given or when she will be receiving her second dose.

She had taken the decision to confirm her own dose in an effort to encourage people around the country to take up their vaccine offers, and so assist the national roll-out strategy.
