Former royal butler Paul Burrell urged Prince Charles to step aside and allow Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to ascend to the throne during an interview with Vicky Pattison. Mr Burrell told Ms Pattison’s podcast ‘The Secret To’ that the Prince of Wales has a lot of baggage and that his eldest son Prince William would be a better fit as the next monarch due to his age.

Ms Pattison said: “I quite want to see Prince William as King.”

Mr Burell replied: “Well it is the Prince of Wales’s birthright of course to become King, he has waited all his life to do that job.

“His ex-wife Princess Diana said she did not think he would ever be King because that job would give him too many limitations.

“He has a lot of baggage with him. Can I be controversial?

“I am not a fan of King Charles and Queen Camilla, I do not have an appetite for that.”

He added: “I personally would like to see Queen Catherine and King William on the throne with their beautiful family.

“If Prince Charles gets there and he is over 80 he is not going to be there very long is he?

“Will he actually get up the steps to the throne? He might be that old.”

However, this view was strongly criticised by royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams.

Mr Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk: “There are those who have failed as successful members of the Royal Family.

“Others have been fulfilled in the roles. William and Kate are perfection in them.

“And as for always playing second fiddle to the next monarch that is William‘s job when he becomes heir to the throne.”
