Kate Middleton and Prince William board Royal Train

Prince William cosied up with Kate as they were to embark on their whirlwind tour across England, Wales and Scotland. In a video filmed just before the couple were heading on the royal train, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are seen speaking with staff at Euston Station.

While chatting to one of the members of the staff on their train’s platform, Prince William gets closer to his wife of nine years and caresses her back in a rare show of affection.

Prince William and Kate then move to thank and say goodbye to a second member of the staff on the platform.

After a brief chat, Prince William invites his wife to get on the train by placing once again his hand on her back.

Kate and William rarely show affection to one another in public, following the example set by the Queen and Prince Philip.

The elderly couple, who married 73 years old, have rarely been seen getting close in public, as previously noted by a body language expert, Robin Kermode.

He said: “The Queen rarely holds hands with her husband in public and this seems to have set an unwritten precedent for the other royals.”

Prince William and Kate, who are set to one day become King and Queen Consort, are likely to be careful to follow in the monarch’s footsteps in the way they behave publicly.

However, despite not showing off their love in public too often, Mr Kermode said the gestures and behaviour Kate and William have with one another clearly show they are “emotionally close”.

He continued: “It is very clear that William and Kate are emotionally close, however, they do not seem to feel the need to prove their love — particularly when on official state business.

“They come across as a strong, independent couple and while they are always on show, they do not feel the need to ‘show’ their love for each other to the world.”

Prince William and Kate have embarked in a tour to thank people who have been working on key roles and on the frontlines since the beginning of the pandemic.

Local artist and the arts and culture sector will also be among the main focuses of the couple’s tours, with this field remaining one of the worst-hit by the pandemic and the closures imposed by the Government to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Kensington Palace added, before Kate and William’s tour began, the Cambridges would also speak to teachers, schoolchildren, young people as well as local artists to learn more about their work, experiences and difficulties during 2020.

Kate and William’s office said: “Many of the engagements undertaken by Their Royal Highnesses will celebrate community spirit and demonstrate the impact of the public’s generosity this year, by showcasing organisations and initiatives that have been supported by community relief funds, including NHS Charities Together.”

Minutes before officially starting their tour, the couple were treated to a live performance of Merry Christmas Everyone by Shakin’ Stevens.

In a clip, Kate can be seen moving to the rhythm of the song and speaking to an amused Prince William.

Commenting on their three-day tour, a spokesperson for the couple said: “The Duke and Duchess are very much looking forward to shining a spotlight on the incredible work that has been done across the country throughout this difficult year and to sharing their gratitude on behalf of the nation for all those supporting their local communities ahead of the Christmas holidays.”

Many members of the public have welcomed the Cambridges’ new tour.

Twitter user Suelly wrote: “Good on them! I’m excited to see them at the train station and look forward to following them on their trip.

“They’ve been encouraging people from home this whole time and now have approval to travel safely.

“It’s good morale for the health workers & the excellent work they doing.”

Another social media user, Carol, wrote: “Great idea to use the Royal train to tour the country. Look forward to hearing about their adventures.”

And Marly added: “It is wonderful that these two beacon of hope driving on a biofuel driven train to personally thank front line workers for giving their all during this pandemic.

“William has raised a great deal of money for the cause, now thanking them in the name of HM, Prince Charles and himself.”

This rare tour in the midst of the ongoing coronavirus crisis marks a royal first for the Cambridges, who never used the exclusive royal train on official capacity.
