Kate Middleton and Prince William: A look at their 2020 highlights

George arrived in 2013, and since Kate and William have gone on to have two other children, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. Their love for all three youngsters is abundantly clear, with both Kate and William regularly talking about how they are developing, what they enjoy doing, and their relationships with one another. Yet, in a moving reflection, Kate once confessed that ever since the first moment she laid eyes on George, life had become completely different to what she would have ever expected.

The Duchess of Cambridge said shortly after George arrived she was “really desperate to get home…back to normality” yet that sense of “normal” would never come.

She explained that “particularly with a first-born baby you think everything is going to go back to how it was”, which was something she “totally underestimated”.

“From that moment really, and I think unless you’ve got children, you don’t realise that no amount of planning and preparation can get you ready for that moment,” Kate told the Happy Baby Happy Mum podcast last year.

A week before the announcement that the pair were expecting, William sparked reports that Kate was pregnant after he accepted a baby romper suit from a member of the public in Cambridge.

According to reports, the outfit had the words “Daddy’s little co-pilot” emblazoned on it, as well as a picture of a helicopter.

At the time, William was working as an RAF Search and Rescue Pilot, and according to the Daily Mail, he “smiled when he collected the item”, before the Duke of Cambridge added: “I’ll keep that.”

William and Kate were in Cambridge when they were approached by Samantha Hill, who gave the couple the gift.

Ms Hill said: “I made it for when his little one comes along, he’s a helicopter pilot so his baby will think his daddy is cool.

“When I gave it to him he said ‘I’ll keep that’ and handed it to his aide.”

This excitement to welcome the youngster, sparked both jubilation – and some concern, with Kate admitting to the podcast host Giovanna Fletcher, that William had practised everything before George’s arrival.

Ms Fletcher praised the Duke of Cambridge for the way he put George into the royal car, describing it as “seamless”.

But Kate revealed that in the run-up to the big day, William had “tried practising on a doll at home” to ensure he could carry out the move correctly.

She added: “But you know, it just never works out the way you’ve planned it.

“It was quite hard to do that, I think, on the world stage. But I think he did a very good job.”

Months before she was pregnant with George, Kate and William both made a key decision to ensure that when they announced they were expecting, it wouldn’t overshadow a key event in the Queen’s diary, according to a royal expert.

Normally, royal historian Robert Lacey said, within a year of a royal couple – particularly those who will be giving birth to a future heir – got married they would announce they are expecting.

However, speaking after Kate and William revealed they were having their first child together, Mr Lacey – author of ‘The Queen – A Life in Brief’ – said: “The Queen and Diana had their first child within a year.

“We wondered why they were waiting and now it’s clear.

“They didn’t want to upstage the Queen’s jubilee.”
