City of London Police said a 200 metre cordon was put in place around Heron Tower while the package was investigated. People were also advised to stay away from the area. Roads were also closed off to both traffic and pedestrians around the tower, which is located close to Liverpool Street station.
They said in a statement: “We are currently responding to a report of a suspect package at the Heron Tower, EC2.
“We have set up a 200 metre cordon around the building, closing off roads in the immediate area to traffic and pedestrians.
“Please avoid the area at this time.
“Updates to follow.”
Police later confirmed the package was deemed “non-suspicous”.
They said: “The package has been deemed non-suspicious and all surrounding roads have now been reopened.
“Thank you for your patience.”
The roads around the area that were closed included the A10 Bishopsgate at A1211 Wormwood Street and the A1211 by Heron Tower.

BBC Radio London Travel said on Twitter: “EC2: #A10 Bishopsgate is closed at A1211 Wormwood Street & A1211 by Heron Tower is also shut for Police investigations. @CityPolice ‘Please avoid the area’.
“Buses: 8, 11, 26, 35, 42, 47, 78, 100 133, 135, 149, 205, 344, 388 divert.”
Heron Tower is the tallest skyscraper in the City of London.
It is also the third tallest in the whole of London, following the Shard and One Canada Square.

The tower has a number of offices within it, inclduing restaurants Sushi Samba and Duck & Waffle, which are located on the top floors.
