Mr Khan told Londoners that the South Africa strain, thought to be more transmittable than the original, has been detected in three areas of the capital. The Labour Mayor confirmed enhanced coronavirus testing will be carried out in parts of Ealing, Haringey and Merton. He urged people over the age of 16 in the W7, N17 and CR4 postcodes to check their council websites for further information and get tested even if they don’t have symptoms.
He wrote on Twitter: “The Covid-19 variant first discovered in South Africa has been identified in a small number of areas across the country, including London.
“Enhanced testing will now be carried out in three postcode areas of W7 in Ealing, N17 in Haringey and CR4 in Merton.”
Speaking to LBC, Mr Khan urged people in affected areas in London not to “panic” but admitted concerns over how quickly the strain of COVID-19 can spread.
He added: “The concern is that this particular type of virus spreads very quickly – the word is transmissible.
“We need to understand how much of this particular strain of the virus has come into the London community.”
