London Metropolitan Police Commisoner Cressida Dick revealed the name of the victim of the police officer who was shot and killed in Croydon this morning. During a speech at 8 o clock on Friday evening the commissioner gave more details of the incident. She said: “It is now my sad duty as commissioner to confirm that our colleague who was killed was 54 year old Matiu Ratana, one of our custody sergeants.”
Ms Dick then highlighted the milestones of Mr Ratana’s career with the Metropolitan Police.
“Matiu joined the Met in 1991 and he was a talented police officer and he was captain of his recruit training class.
“He was posted to Charing Cross and he worked as a constable on the streets of the West End and Westminster in a variety of roles.
“Later he served on our territorial support group across the whole of London.

“He was also often dealing with the most violent and dangerous of criminals.
“Later he worked as a constable on the streets at Hillingdon and in 2010 he was promoted to Sergeant where he worked in Hackney.
“He was first off on a response team, leading constables as they responded to calls for help from the public.
“He was dealing with everything that might be thrown at them and him, he was then on a neighbourhood team, again in Hackney.”
