The power outage is believed to have taken place just before 5pm, with people across the borough affected. It is believed to have caused traffic lights and street lighting to switch off as well as impacting people’s homes.

Electricity North West, which runs the power network, says the electricity is likely to remain off until around 8pm following reports of a fire at a substation.

A spokesperson for Electricity North West tweeted: “We have had reports of a substation fire in Salford, M7.

“Engineers are on the way to site to investigate.

“If you see or hear anything of concern please call 105.”

They later added: “Our engineers have arrived on site and are working towards providing a restoration time.

“We have reduced the number of customers affected from 1600+ to 163. Updates will follow once we know further information.”
