Last Christmas, the Duke and the Duchess chose to support a social enterprise in a special way instead of buying their son Christmas presents. The couple bought 100 hats from Make Give Live, which supports children in need, in their son’s name.
The brand was subsequently flooded with customers, receiving 300 orders in just one day, a huge jump from their usual 45 purchases per month.
The company’s founder Claire Conza said the letter she received from Meghan and Harry was a “wonderful gift for the organisation.”
She told the New Zealand Herald: “As Make Give Live operates on a buy one, give one model, this will allow the group to make an extra 200 hats to distribute to families in need next winter through the various charities it supports.”
The couple found out about the initiative thanks to New Zealand’s Prime Minister, Jacinda Adern, who got in touch with them first.
Ms Conza explained the unusual story in a post shared to Make Give Live’s Instagram which gathered more than 2,400 likes.
She wrote: “Meghan & Harry have generously given us a gift that will keep on giving well beyond this Christmas.
“Thank you @jacindaardern for letting them know we were trying to get in touch to wish them Merry Christmas and thank them for shining a light on the work we do with this image that captured hearts around the world.
“We love that they share our values and wrote to us just before Christmas to order 100 beanies to donate to Archie’s Kiwi friends (children in need in NZ) which, based on our model of Buy one – Give one, will enable us to donate 200 beanies.
His voice came on unexpectedly as the gospel song This Little Light of Mine played out the episode.
The song has a special history for Meghan and Harry, who played it at their wedding in 2018.
Before it played, Meghan explained, quoting Martin Luther King: “It was the music that we wanted playing when we started our lives together.
“Because as we all know, ‘darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that’.”
