Meghan Markle and Prince Harry in January announced they would take a step back from their royal careers to establish themselves as financially independent from the Royal Family. But reports emerged this week suggesting the Duke and Duchess of Sussex had bought a new multi-million Santa Barbara mansion with the help of Prince Charles. E! News host Morgan Stewart noted accepting help from the Prince of Wales could affect their dreams of becoming economically independent.

Ms Stewart said: “I’m so turned around by these two, I don’t even know.

“There’s like a new story every single day – something is happening, they are moving, they need more privacy.

“I think it’s just not a great look. They leave, the want privacy, they want to be financially independent. Everything we’ve ever heard from them since them moving from Britain to Los Angeles was that they’re going to do it on their own, they’re going to be financially independent, they have got deals in the work.

“They’ve now moved from the Beverly Hills mansion to Santa Barbara, and then they have to ask dad for help…I just don’t think it’s the best reflection on Harry, the Royal Family and just the people there.”

She added: “What’s going on? You leave, you want to do your own thing, it’s messy, it doesn’t look good.”

Fellow presenter Erin Lim suggested any offer for help from Prince Charles could be the result of the “super-close” relationship Meghan shared with the Prince of Wales since she joined the Royal Family.

Ms Lim said: “I’m not surprised after reading some of the reports about Meghan being super-close to Prince Charles and her treating him like a second dad.

“We don’t know how their relationship ended, there are lot of rumours about the brothers having a rift but I’m not surprised. Who knows if that’s the truth.”

The Prince of Wales has traditionally funded the private lifestyles of his sons and their wives thanks to the profitable lands of the duchy.

Reports earlier this year suggested Prince William and Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge may go on to further subsidise the Duke and Duchess of Sussex when the Duke of Cambridge takes over the management of the duchy in the future.

Online magazine The Talko said: “Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be stepping down from their royal duties but they are still part of the family.

“They are giving up a significant source of income and it’s expected that Prince Charles will privately subsidise their lifestyles.

“When Prince William inherits the rights to the Duchy of Cornwall, it’s likely that he and Kate will be responsible for helping out Harry and Meghan if they need it.”
