Meghan Markle and Prince Harry spoke to members of the Queen’s Commonwealth Trust over a video call discussing the growing role of social media in the modern world. The Duke and Duchess praised the participants for the variety of causes and endeavours they have been a part of to improve communities across the world. Meghan also called for a stop to the culture of sharing and spreading things online while condemning its toxic nature.

The Duchess began by saying: “Let us be clear on that, it is such important work and certainly given how long ago you started it.

“Seeing where we are now, the space online and everyone’s mental and emotional well-being are potentially more fragile than ever before and certainly with COVID-19 and our dependability on our devices right now.

“In the absence of human interaction, people are going online more than ever before to feel community.

“Unfortunately, that community can become divisive and isn’t a pack for good but rather a group of people ganging up on one another.

“What is challenging about that is people don’t feel an escape and people can feel lonely in that space.

“The work you are doing is vital because it is about people knowing their worth.”

The Duchess suggested ways that people could help stop the spread of toxic communities online.

She said: “It is equally about not sharing it and not becoming part of the culture of saying this is so horrible then sharing it.

Prince Harry also praised all the participants of the video call as he talked to Rosie Thomas, the co-founder of Project Rockit in Australia, Hunter Johnson, the founder of The Man Cave in Australia, Vee Kativhu, Study & Empowerment YouTuber and Founder of “Empowered by Vee,” Brighton Kaoma, founder of Agents of Change Foundation in Zambia as well as the QCT’s Chief Executive, Nicola Brentnall.

He said: “The optimism and the hope that we get is from listening and speaking to people like you, because there is no turning back now – everything is coming to a head.

Solutions exist and change is happening far quicker than it ever has done before.”
