Meghan Markle and Harry: Expert discusses review of HRH titles

Speculation around Meghan’s interest in politics flared last summer, after she openly spoke about voting rights, voter registration in the US and the November election. While a brand and reputation management expert believes it could be possible for the Duchess of Sussex to step into the political arena he warned this move could hurt Archewell’s audience potential and Meghan and Harry’s revenue.

Eric Schiffer, chairman of Reputation Management Consultants, told Express.co.uk when asked whether a political career would fit in with Meghan’s brand: “Yes.

“I think she plays largely to the left, I think she has alienated many Americans who look at her as having attacked President Trump.

“Despite the division surrounding Trump, there are many that are still loyal to him.”

And a political career by the Duchess of Sussex, Mr Schiffer added, could risk alienating more people.

He said: “If she enters politics that would further suffocate the audience potential for Meghan and Harry and could have humbling effect to their revenue stream.”

In October, weeks before Joe Biden became the 46th President of the United States, Mr Schiffer had already warned Meghan was alienating part of the American audience by taking a stance on the US election and other topics that “don’t sit well with Americans who are Trump fans”.

He said: “That is like asking for a war with a part of America at a time when they want to build their brand and create a level of interest as producers and as entertainment creators.

“There is no logic to create a partnership brand by in essence attacking the President and suggesting that people need to vote so that there is a reduction in hateful speech.

“That’s a dog whistle to anyone that says ‘get Republicans out’.

“So the liberals and moderates that don’t like the Trump Administration will take kindly to it.

“But Republicans will see Meghan and Harry as part of the out-of-touch celebrity elite or those actors that are suddenly primadonnas of Hollywood and now want to pontificate about politics.”

Since joining the Royal Family in 2018, Meghan has not openly backed one side of the political spectrum or a party.

However, British commentators and even a US congressman accused Meghan and Harry of stepping into the political debate despite their royal status when she called the November 3 election “the most important of our lifetime” and he urged people to reject hate speech and misinformation.

In 2016, Meghan spoke in no uncertain terms about Mr Trump, branding him “misogynistic, and so vocal about it” in an interview with Larry Wilmore.

In the wake of the controversy surrounding Meghan’s comments ahead of the US election, one source claimed the Duchess of Sussex may eye a political career in the future.

A close friend told Vanity Fair in September: “One of the reasons she was so keen not to give up her American citizenship was so she had the option to go into politics.

“I think if Meghan and Harry ever gave up their titles she would seriously consider running for president.”

However, a well-placed source who works closely with Meghan dismissed claims the Duchess would ever enter a career in politics.

This source told the magazine: “While there’s no denying she is interested and engaged in politics as a topic, she harbours no ambition to enter a career in politics herself”.

Royal watchers appear divided on whether Meghan could ever step into the political arena.

Journalist Omid Scobie, who co-authored the biography of the Sussexes Finding Freedom, said during True Royalty’s documentary ‘Meghan For President?’: “She has her eyes set on the US presidency.

“Meghan is the embodiment of the American dream. One day we may see Meghan become president.”

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams previously told Express.co.uk: “It would be no surprise if she eventually went into politics.

“Meghan is exceptionally well connected – with connections in the Democrat party. She knows the likes of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.”

However, biographer Andrew Morton, said: “I would state categorically that she has no chance of ever running for president. She would be eaten alive”.
