Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are “clutching at straws” as the pair try to become US celebrities, according to a leading PR expert. Nick Ede, who worked with Meghan in London before she met Harry, claimed the couple need to do more to cement the Sussex brand if they are to continue to be successful. Speaking to Sky News, Mr Ede criticised the pair for rushing into their mega-million deals too quickly after moving to California last year.

He told Sky’s royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills: “You look at celebrity in a big way, and a celebrity will do their autobiography, they will do their film deal.

“It’s basically that kind of blueprint, and they have done it all in a year, you know?

“They’re becoming a global entity. They’ve got the podcast, they’ve got the Netflix deal, they’ve had the warts-and-all autobiography.

“It has been a very interesting journey to watch.”

However, he warned Meghan and Harry against rushing into too many deals.

Mr Ede explained: “I feel like Meghan and Harry at the moment are almost clutching at straws at what their brand is. Is it the politics, is it women’s rights?

“You have to remember that two years ago Meghan was a Hollywood actress in a B-soap, and Harry was a member of the Royal Family, who do great things.

“But he’s not a political activist and she’s not a human rights activist.

Today marks a year since the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced they were stepping down as senior royals.

On January 8 2020, they released a lengthy statement on their now-defunct Instagram account Sussex Royal and a newly-created website, SussexRoyal.com, in which they outlined what they wanted for their future.

The Queen was initially said to have been left “completely blindsided” by their statement.

The senior royals are expected to reconvene in March this year, at the end of the 12-month review period agreed in Norfolk.

At the meeting, the royals will discuss whether they are happy with the terms in place or if the so-called Megxit deal needs to be changed.
