The Duchess of Sussex was in a relationship with the Hollywood producer and agent for nearly a decade and the pair were married for two years. However, they split up seven years ago, with Meghan sending back her rings in the post, and divorced, citing irreconcilable differences. It is believed this was in a large part due to Meghan moving to Toronto to film the TV legal drama Suits, which she starred in for seven seasons, while Trevor continued his life in Los Angeles.
That said, it was apparently a huge shock to their family and friends, in particular Trevor’s parents who had “embraced her like a daughter”, one of Meghan’s family members told biographer Andrew Morton.
Mr Morton wrote in his 2018 book ‘Meghan: A Hollywood Princess’: “The marriage of Trevor and Meghan was over.
“The sad news in the summer of 2013 came as a bolt from the blue.
“Everyone in their circle was genuinely shocked, none more so than Trevor’s parents David and Leslie who, according to a member of the Markle clan, had embraced her like a daughter.”

Trevor is from a Jewish Family in Great Neck, New York.
The couple had taken on some of his heritage in their lives, including their wedding in which they were hoisted up on chairs, in keeping with Jewish tradition.
Trevor also liked to visit his family in New York regularly, which became difficult when he was also having to spend weekends in Toronto to see Meghan.
However, David and Leslie Engelson were not the only people shocked by the sudden split.

Trevor himself was taken aback, as were the couple’s friends.
Meghan’s oldest friend Ninaki Priddy, who had been maid of honour at their wedding, told the Daily Mail: “I knew they fought sometimes, but it wasn’t anything huge.
“The only obstacle was the distance because she was living in Toronto and Trevor was based in LA, but I thought they were manoeuvring through it.
“Trevor would take his work to Canada to be with her and run his office remotely.”

Mr Morton added: “It was such a surprise for Trevor that even at a distance of five years, he can barely contain his anger ‒ the normally laid back New Yorker switching gear from his usual ‘hi bro, how’s it going’ to a cold fury when her name comes into the conversation.”
Trevor reportedly told inquirers: “I have zero to say about her.”
Another friend said Trevor went from cherishing Meghan to “feeling like he was a piece of something stuck to the bottom of her shoe”.
Not only did Trevor react badly to the sudden break-up but Meghan’s relationship with Ninaki also deteriorated.
After listening to Trevor’s side of the story, she apparently did not want to be friends with Meghan anymore.
While Ninaki has not explained explicitly what happened, she did say: “I think Meghan was calculated, very calculated, in the way she handled people and relationships.
“She is very strategic in the way she cultivates friends. Once she decides you’re not part of her life, she can be very cold. It’s this shutdown mechanism she has.
“There’s nothing to negotiate, she’s made her decision and that’s it.

“The way she handled it, Trevor definitely had the rug pulled out from under him. He was hurt.”
However, fellow actor Abby Wathen had a more sympathetic view.
She explained in the ITV documentary ‘Prince Harry and Meghan: Truly madly deeply’ that Meghan “took her power back”.
Abby said Meghan simply realised it was not the right relationship for her and moved on
