The Queen and Philip will celebrate Christmas “quietly” this year in Windsor Castle, the first time they have done so since 1998.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson confirmed that the monarch and the Duke of Edinburgh will not travel to Sandringham Estate as is tradition due to the coronavirus restrictions in place.
The spokesperson added: “Having considered all the appropriate advice, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh have decided that this year they will spend Christmas quietly in Windsor.”
Prince Edward, the Queen’s youngest son, and Sophie, Countess of Wessex will spend the holidays with the monarch.
William and Kate also face a dilemma for Christmas, with the couple forced to choose between spending the holidays with the Middleton’s or the Royal Family.
The Daily Telegraph reported this weekend that Buckingham Palace is reviewing whether the Cambridge royals can join in the monarch’s Christmas bubble.
Royal physicians are advising the Queen on whether the Cambridge’s can attend, as Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are major factors in the decision.
The Queen and Philip are considered at high risk from coronavirus due to their advanced age, and George, 7, and Charlotte, 5, have attended school during the pandemic.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will also miss this year’s royal Christmas, as they spend their first holiday in their California home.
A source close to the couple said to PEOPLE that the Sussex royals will spend the holidays with Meghan’s mum Doria Ragland.
They added they can’t wait to start decorating their Montecito home, and added: “They are very happy.
“Archie is thriving and growing quickly. As a family, they spend hours outside.”
