Channel 5’s royal documentary ‘Prince Philip: The Bachelor Years’ reflected on a crucial moment in the relationship between himself and his grandsons, Prince Harry and Prince William. After the death of their mother, Princess Diana, Prince Philip argued the boys would feel a great deal of regret if they did not walk behind their mother’s coffin during the procession. Royal commentators Jennie Bond and Hugo Vickers highlighted the importance of this advice.
The narrator said: “Princess Diana was killed in a car accident in Paris.
“Her young sons were staying at Balmoral with Prince Philip and the Queen when they received the terrible news.”

She said: “There was probably no one better qualified or better placed to help Prince William and Prince Harry after the death of their mother than their grandfather Philip.

“You have to remember that he had essentially lost his mother when he was coming up to nine.
“His father virtually abandoned him so he was very empathetic to his grandsons William and Harry.”
Royal historian Hugo Vickers discussed Prince Philips guidance to William and Harry during the funeral procession.
He said: “Prince William and Prince Harry weren’t terribly keen on walking in the procession.
“He will be pleased he listened to the wise counsel of his grandfather, someone who has experienced great tragedy.”
Royal expert Ingrid Seward noted a key touching moment during the procession that she believed would have been a good comfort for the William and Harry.
She said: “There is a very sweet moment when Prince Philip puts his arms around Prince William as they go under Admiralty Arch.”
