The images relayed around the world on January 6 showed thousands of Trump loyalists ransacking the building, which contains the House of Representatives and the Senate. Mr Trump himself has been widely blamed for inciting them to do so, having encouraged them to march on the Capitol during an incendiary speech minutes earlier.
While Harry did not name Mr Trump, he did imply tighter curbs were needed on social media, suggesting it was to blame for the spread of misinformation.
He told the Fast Company website yesterday: “We have seen time and again what happens when the real-world cost of misinformation is disregarded. There is no way to downplay this.
“There was a literal attack on democracy in the United States, organised on social media, which is an issue of violent extremism.”
He added: “I’m not saying we should abandon technology in favour of Speakers’ Corner.
“Rather, it’s that we should avoid buying into the idea that social media is the ultimate modern-day public square and that any attempt to ask platforms to be accountable to the landscape they’ve created is an attack or restriction of speech.
“I think it’s a false choice to say you have to pick between free speech or a more compassionate and trustworthy digital world. They are not mutually exclusive.”

“When we vote, our values are put into action, and our voices are heard.”
Harry said he was not able to vote in the election because he is not a US citizen but he urged Americans to “reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity”.
Critics were quick to point out Meghan’s previous support for Hillary Clinton, the Democrat candidate defeated by Mr Trump in 2016.
Robert Oulds, director of the Bruges Group think tank and author of the recent book Moralitis: A Cultural Virus, told Express.co.uk: “The latest video by Harry and Meghan, ostensibly urging people to vote in the forthcoming US presidential election, is naked campaigning for the Democrat Party.
“The royal couple urge voters to reject ‘hate’, clearly referring to their bete noire Donald Trump.
“These woke warriors have breached protocol by interfering in an election.
“The House of Windsor should act swiftly, stripping Harry and Meghan of their royal titles.”
He added: “The Queen knows that the monarch and the Royal Family must stay above politics.
“Harry has let his grandmother down yet again.
“The Queen and Prince Philip will be in despair at this undignified behaviour and blatant disregard for Royal protocol.”
