Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s UK home, Frogmore Cottage, was the same estate where former king Edward VIII “spent a lot of time”, according to a royal commentator. Royal correspondent Robert Jobson spoke to Real Royalty about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to hold their 2018 wedding in Windsor Castle’s St George’s Chapel, instead of other locations such as Westminster Abbey. As the biographer spoke, he also noted that the Queen’s estranged uncle had also favoured the residence.

He told Real Royalty: “Family ties are a part of what binds Harry to Windsor Castle.

“For the once wild prince, the relationship to the place might run deeper.

“There are real memories here for Harry of growing up, learning to ride horses.

“It was also just a short walk from school for visits with his grandmother.”

Mr Jobson continued: “Harry was based at Windsor with his regiment.

“He also went to school round the corner, at Eton College.

“Apparently Meghan and Harry spent a lot of time romancing each other at Frogmore.

“That’s what used to be the Duke of Windsor, Edward VIII’s estate. Apparently he spent a lot of time there.”

King Edward VIII had grown up at Frogmore House and had maintained a close connection with the residence while growing up, including during the early years of his relationship with Wallis Simpson.

In 1972, Edward died and his body was returned to Britain to lie at St George’s Chapel.

Despite the tension between the Duke and the monarchy, the funeral service was attended by the Royal Family, and the Duchess of Windsor stayed at Buckingham Palace during her visit.

Fourteen years later, Wallis died and was also buried in the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore House alongside her husband.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have since stepped down as senior members of the monarchy and moved to California in the US.

However, they have confirmed that Frogmore Cottage will remain their home in the UK.
