Prince Harry appeared to “tear up” when he and Meghan Markle were given a standing ovation at last year’s Mountbatten Festival of Music. Royally Obsessed podcast hosts Roberta Fiorito and Rachel Bowie discussed the event amid a breakdown of the best royal moments of 2020. They noted that it was a particularly “poignant” farewell for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex before they officially stepped down.

Ms Fiorito told listeners: “The standing ovation they gave Harry at the Mountbatten Festival of Music was such a bittersweet moment.

“The picture of Harry and Meghan where he’s wearing his full military outfit was so iconic.

“During that standing ovation, there was a moment where he kind of looked like he teared up.

“It was so poignant for them to say goodbye in that way to the military community.”

The annual Mountbatten Festival of Music sees the Royal Marines showcase military musicians and traditional marches.

It has been an important event in Harry’s diary ever since he succeeded in the role of Captain General Royal Marines from Prince Philip in 2017.

However that is now one of the positions the Duke of Sussex has been forced to give up in the wake of the so-called Megxit.

Additionally, he is no longer Honorary Air Force Commandant of the Royal Air Force Base Honington or Honorary Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Naval Commands’ Small Ships and Diving.

Prince Harry himself is a veteran after serving in the Army for many years.

The royal was even secretly deployed to Afghanistan for active service in 2007 and again in 2012.

There have been suggestions that the spring review of the Sussexes’ exit deal could see some of the Duke’s official military appointments returned to him.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk: “I think that he would much appreciate it if his military links were restored to him. He probably hopes that they will be when they review the deal next year.

“No one currently holds those posts after all so this may be on the most likely changes to their arrangement.”
