During the HeirPod podcast, Omid Scobie and Maggie Rulli discussed the investigation into the BBC’s Panorama interview with Princess Diana. Mr Scobie stated that Prince William’s statement on the inquiry will not be the last royal watchers hear from the Duke of Cambridge and Duke of Sussex on the matter.

Mr Scobie said: “There are a lot of unanswered questions and I am sure this will probably not be the last we hear from William or Harry on the matter.

“I am sure as more information comes to light we may end up hearing from the Duke of Sussex.”

During the podcast, Mr Scobie also admitted he was surprised Prince William had shown support for the investigation before it had concluded.

Ms Rulli asked: “Under other circumstances do you think the brothers would have made a joint statement?”

Mr Scobie replied: “It is interesting, I was surprised we heard from Prince William this week and I have been trying to figure out whether there are politics behind the decision.

“Is there a reason to show support for an investigation such as this at such an early time?

“Because I could definitely imagine them both wanting to say something when the investigation has concluded.”

In a statement, Kensington Palace said the Duke of Cambridge welcomed the inquiry, saying: “The independent investigation is a step in the right direction.

The source added: “What is poignant is that he used to join forces with Harry on anything to do with protecting their mum’s legacy and memory.

“But this time, it was noticeably only his name and his words on the statement.

“It is very sad they can’t even meet in the middle over standing up for Diana, but it’s an indication of how deep their falling out runs.

“If they cannot come together in honour of Diana, it’s hard to see what might reunite them.”

A source close to Prince Harry has however rejected claims the Duke of Sussex’s silence on the matter is anything to do with an alleged rift between the brothers.

They said: “You do not need a public statement to imagine how he is feeling privately. People know how much his mother means to him.

“He has spoken out bravely in the past about loss and grief, and the immense impact it has had on him.

“Sadly, some people are not just seeing this as a drive for truth, but also trying to use this as an opportunity to try to drive a wedge between the brothers.”
