Royal author Robert Lacey claimed to know why the Duke of Cambridge waited for months before telling the nation he had battled the disease. Speaking to Fox News, Mr Lacey said: “Here in Britain, there is controversy over the fact that we now discovered that he had COVID-19 back at the beginning of the first spike and he concealed it.
“At the time, the Prime Minister had coronavirus, his father had coronavirus.”
He added: “[William] decided the world didn’t need him to be the third high-profiled coronavirus victim.
“He followed all the rules. He did the quarantine, the self-isolating.
“He did Zoom, even while he was ill, and then got back to work.”
The Duke reportedly found out he had coronavirus just days after his father, Prince Charles, was diagnosed with COVID-19 in late March.
It is currently unknown whether other members of the Royal Family tested positive for the virus.
However, Prince William isolated in Anmer Hall, his family home, where Palace doctors kept close watch.
Although the Duke was able to continue working after testing positive for the virus, a source told the Sun: “William was hit pretty hard by the virus – it really knocked him for six.
“But as a result of his own experiences, he realises absolutely anyone can catch this awful disease – and knows how imperative it is that we all take this second lockdown seriously.”
But the Duke has faced criticism after failing to communicate the diagnosis immediately after obtaining the results.
According to Mr Lacey, some have even considered it a reason to believe it is inappropriate for an heir to “hide things from us”.
The royal author said: “People have said this is not right for an heir to the throne to keep this sort of thing a secret. He should be open. He’s hiding things from us.”
