The Duke of Cambridge will join actor Chris Hemsworth and former Democrat nominee for US President Al Gore on the virtual conference. William has been outspoken about the dangers of climate change, and is a patron of many environmental charities.

The Duke will make his debut on October 10 at TED’s Countdown Global Launch.

Along with the panel of celebrities and environmentalists, William will be discussing how the world can tackle global warming.

He will appear on the fourth and final session of the conference, which is called Breakthroughs and is intended to explore “the nexus of protection, regeneration and transformation using powerful examples”.

TED went on to describe the session, and said: “The world around us is mainly made of two things: nature and the materials that we extract from it.

“To fight climate change, we need to protect and regenerate nature and transform materials into low or zero-carbon alternatives.”

It follows William unveiling the Earthshot Prize last year to encourage new solutions to the climate crisis.

It will be awarded to five people each year for the next decade, and promises a “significant financial reward” for innovative solutions to problems such as air pollution and preserving biodiversity.

The award, backed by Sir David Attenborough, is touted highly by William, who said: “Either we continue as we are and irreparably damage our planet or we remember our unique power as human beings and our continual ability to lead, innovate and problem-solve.

“Remember the awe-inspiring civilisations that we have built, the life-saving technology we have created, the fact that we have put a man on the moon.

“People can achieve great things. The next 10 years present us with one of our greatest tests – a decade of action to repair the Earth.”

William also helped launch a polar research ship last year to study ocean life.

The RSS David Attenborough was launched in Maidenhead, and will spend the next 25 to 30 years studying changes to Antarctic and Arctic life.

He said at the time: “As last week’s climate protests the world over, and yesterday’s report on our oceans and frozen regions demonstrated, there has never been a more important moment for this ship to get to work.”

Mr Attenborough, with William at the launch, added: “Great problems require great research and facts in order to solve them.

“That’s what this astonishing ship will be here to do: To find out the facts.”

William’s involvement with the TED conference marks the latest instance of a member of the Royal Family getting involved with environmental issue.

The Duke’s father, Prince Charles, has been a longstanding advocate for addressing climate change

In March, Charles attended Water Aid’s London summit to urge nations to tackle the environmental crisis.

The Prince of Wales, who was named president of WaterAid in 1991, said: “With the urgency that now exists around avoiding irreversible damage to our planet, we must put ourselves on what can only be described as a war footing.”

William’s brother, Prince Harry, has also been a huge advocate of tackling climate change.

While William was launching the RSS David Attenborough, Harry spoke in Kasane, Botswana about the environment.

He said: “I genuinely don’t understand how anyone in this world, whoever we are—you, us, children, leaders, whoever it is—no one can deny science, otherwise we live in a very, very troubling world.”

Harry also shared his support for climate activist Greta Thunberg, and said “the world’s children are striking”.
