Prince William’s Cambridge title will “go back into the Duke closet” when he succeeds his father, a royal expert has said. Marlene Koenig spoke to Express.co.uk about what will likely change for the Duke of Cambridge when he finally becomes King. She explained how his honours would also change when his father ascends the throne.
Ms Koenig told Express.co.uk: “When Charles becomes king, William will be styled as the Duke of Cornwall and Cambridge.
“Prince of Wales is not hereditary so at some point, his father will have to name him.
“That doesn’t stop William being Duke of Cornwall or Duke of Rothesay or Duke of Cambridge.
“However, when he finally becomes king, it will.”

She continued: “When William becomes king, Cambridge goes back into the Duke closet.
“It reverts to the Crown and it can be recreated.”
William was given the Cambridge title on the day of his wedding to Kate Middleton in April 2011.
It was announced that the Queen had created him as Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus.
The title became extinct with his death due to the Royal Marriages Act 1772.
He didn’t ask permission Queen Victoria, the monarch at the time’s permission to marry Sarah Fairbrother, an actress with four illegitimate children by three fathers.
As a result, their marriage was invalid and their sons could not take on the Cambridge titles.
In contrast, William’s children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis will remain Cambridges when Charles takes the throne.
When William is king, George will become the new Prince of Wales while his siblings will simply lose the Cambridge moniker.
