Princess Anne earned the respect of the public throughout the decades thanks to her commitment to public office and her patronages freed of any “nonsense”, according to a royal expert. Unlike most other working members of the Royal Family, the princess carries out most of her engagements behind closed doors by her own choice.

Over the past five decades, the Princess Royal has worked non-stop to support charities and organisations she believes in without being followed around by the press on most occasions.

Despite the lack of media attention, her commitment to the Crown – as well as a few rare interviews and pictures of the royal shared on social media by Buckingham Palace – has made Princess Anne a much beloved member of the family.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told Express.co.uk: “The plaudits that the Princess Royal received when she turned 70 were universal.

“In most years she will have carried out the most royal engagements.

“She discourages the press and concentrates on the job in a no-nonsense way that has earned public respect.

“She gives occasional interviews but her support for her charities is so clearly what is important to her.

“She has universally been praised for deciding against giving titles to her children, wanting them to have as normal an upbringing as possible.”

The Princess Royal, the Queen’s only daughter, received more attention than usual by royal fans and the press over the past few weeks, ahead of her 70th birthday.

On the eve of her birthday, Buckingham Palace released three new pictures of the royal, taken at her home in Gloucestershire in February, to mark her special day.

The Princess Royal’s birthday was also marked with a promotion by the Army and the Royal Air Force.

As announced ahead of her birthday on August 15, the Princess Royal is taking up the role of general and air chief marshal, bringing her ranks in line with her rank in the Royal Navy.

Princess Anne celebrated her birthday privately, after the coronavirus pandemic disrupted her plans, as revealed by her son-in-law Mike Tindall.

Appearing on the One Show he said: “We did have plans – it would’ve been up in Scotland – but obviously with COVID and Aberdeen being locked down a bit, I think everything’s been scaled back a little bit.

“It’s a shame. I’m sure we’ll do something as a family to celebrate her 70 amazing years, she’s just an incredible woman in terms of how much work she can get through in the year.

“We will be doing something, as yet I don’t know whether she knows – so my lips are sealed.”
