King Charles I’s eldest daughter, Princess Mary, was given the title to imitate the French tradition of calling the eldest daughter of the monarch ‘Madame Royale’.
Unlike other royals, Princess Anne did not receive her royal title on her wedding day.
The monarch often awards new royal titles to senior members of the Royal Family when they tie the knot, but Princess Anne is believed to have turned down the Queen’s offer of a title when she married Captain Mark Philips in 1973.
It is for this reason that Anne’s children, Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall, do not hold any royal titles or HRH status.
Anne did not receive her royal title until she was 36 years old.
