Princess Diana herself detailed the way in which she revealed her engagement to Prince Charles in Diana: Her True Story – In Her Own Words. In it, she claims she and her close friends drove around London after the news, and didn’t tell her parents until the next day.
Netflix series The Crown recently depicted the occasion, in which news of the engagement was also met with excitement from Diana’s friends.
Analysts say the royal drama’s depiction of that particular moment may not have been too far from what actually happened.
Although written by author Andrew Morton, the ‘Diana: Her True Story’ biography received co-operation and input from the Princess.
The real version of events is outlined in the biography Diana: Her True Story
The 1992 book reads, according to Town and Country: “I came back [to the flat] and sat on my bed. ‘Girls, guess what?’ They said: ‘He asked you. What did you say?’
“’Yes please.’ They screamed and howled and we went for a drive around London with our secret. I rang my parents the next morning.”
Some of Princess Diana’s friends remained a key part of her life going forward.

Meanwhile, the show also depicts how Princess Diana chose her engagement ring, which was offered to her by Queen Elizabeth II.
The Princess-to-be can be seen considering a selection of rings before choosing the now-famous sapphire one.
Today, the same ring is worn by Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge.
She is able to do so thanks to Prince Harry, who had chosen the ring as a keepsake from his late mother Princess Diana.

Season 4 of The Crown was made available on streaming service Netflix over the weekend.
Already, reports have surfaced of royal insiders being unhappy with the way events in the drama are depicted.
One such insider told the Mail on Sunday: “’In this case, it’s dragging up things that happened during very difficult times 25 or 30 years ago without a thought for anyone’s feelings.”
The series also goes into the Queen’s relationship with Margaret Thatcher
Richard Fitzwilliams, a royal expert, has in contrast claimed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle “might even be sympathetic” with some of the portrayals in the show.
He told : “And of course, the couple were very unhappy as senior members of the family.”
The Queen’s communications secretary has previously said the series depicts a “fictionalised interpretation of historical events,” The Times reports.
The fourth season of the show depicts the relationship between Prince Charles and Princess Diana, as well as the dynamics between Queen Elizabeth II and Margaret Thatcher.
