Princess Diana struggled with living at Kensington Palace according to royal biographer Richard Kay who detailed how the royal felt that she was spied on by staff and had her movements reported. It comes as the world will commemorate the anniversary of the royal’s tragic death on Monday August, 31. The mother to Princes William and Harry officially moved into Apartment 8 and 9 at Kensington Palace after marrying Prince Charles in 1981. Following their divorce in 1996, Diana kept her home at the palace.

Speaking to True Royalty TV, Mr Kay said: “It was a mixture for her. In many ways, it was a happy home and she had a lot of happy memories here raising William and Harry in the early days of the marriage which were actually quite happy.

“But it later became a prison for her.

“It symbolised everything which she found so frustrating about being a royal Princess.

“She felt spied on but the spying was only for her own protection.

“The security cameras you see all over the place.

“She felt that the police that guarded the palace were constantly reporting on her movements, who her friends were, who came to see her.

“It became a real difficulty for her because she couldn’t really decide if she wanted to completely break free from that royal life and strike out and live outside the palace or whether she needed the protection it afforded her.

“In the end, by the time of her death, I think she more or less decided she needed to stay here.”

Mr Larcombe added: “Let’s not forget another parallel that Diana did.

“She became so paranoid that her Metropolitan Police security detail were leaking stories that she sacked them all.

“She put them tragically at the mercy of Mohamed al-Fayed’s security team. We know how that ended.

“There are quite shocking and chilling similarities in the situation that Harry is now in.

“I hope that he is sensible enough to acknowledge where Princess Diana actually went wrong in her strategy.

“There were times where she did make mistakes.”
