The Princess of Wales reignited royal fans’ hearts last year when Netflix released an explosive fourth series of its hit royal show The Crown. Season 4 portrayed the early relationship between Prince Charles and Princess Diana which was met with heavy criticism from some royal commentators.
But new research into this year’s predicted most popular baby names suggests that many viewers of the series were delighted and sympathised with Princess Diana’s character in the show.
My Nametags found that ‘Diana’ is the fourth most popular baby name for 2021.
In a statement Lars B. Andersen, Managing Director, at My Nametags said: “Names are at the heart of what we do, and we are always curious to identify new trends in popular names and what is driving them.
“We have put together our list of 2021 name predictions based on the names that we saw rising in popularity throughout 2020 and we hope it will act as inspiration for those naming their children in the year ahead.”
Ahead of Princess Diana in the baby names list is ‘Billie’ after the five-time Grammy award-winning artist, Billie Eilish, who took the top spot.
In second place came another Netflix inspired name – ‘Maeve’ – after the lead character of the series Sex Education.
In third place was ‘Anya’ from Anya Taylor-Joy, the star who played the lead in Emma and another hit Netflix show The Queen’s Gambit.
The Princess of Wales’ name ‘Diana’ came in fourth place thanks to The Crown.

Representatives from Netflix said The Crown will not receive a disclaimer before each episode claiming it is clear the series is “a work of fiction”.
In a statement, Netflix said: “We have always presented ‘The Crown’ as a drama – and we have every confidence our members understand it’s a work of fiction that’s broadly based on historical events.
“As a result we have no plans – and see no need – to add a disclaimer.”
Concern grew last year as royal commentators claimed the show will cause lasting damage to the Royal Family.
A friend of Prince Charles told The Mail on Sunday: “It is quite sinister the way that Morgan is clearly using light entertainment to drive a very overt republican agenda and people just don’t see it.
“They have been lured in over the first few series until they can’t see how they are being manipulated.
“It is highly sophisticated propaganda.”
The fourth series of The Crown depicts Princess Diana’s eating disorder and Prince Charles’ alleged affair with Camilla Parker Bowles.
Within a month of its release, the series had already been watched by more viewers than Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s actual wedding.
The show also caused Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, to call on Netflix to add a disclaimer.
