The special coin will be part of a collection of five to be released this year, the Royal Mint has confirmed. Among the new coins, a new £2 coin will mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of Scottish novelist Sir Walter Scott, author of Ivanhoe.

Another £2 coin will commemorate the 75th anniversary of the death of The War Of The Worlds writer HG Wells.

Clare Maclennan, of the consumer department at The Royal Mint, said the new collection will pay tribute to “some of the biggest anniversaries” this year.

She said: “Each year The Royal Mint unveils a series of commemorative coins to celebrate key moments and milestones that helped shape Britain.

“This year’s annual set marks some of the biggest anniversaries in 2021, including Her Majesty the Queen’s 95th birthday and John Logie Baird’s legacy of innovation.

“Each coin is a miniature work of art and has been designed as a treasured keepsake or gift.

“This year’s annual set is particularly special for The Royal Mint as we celebrate one of the biggest milestones in our 1,100-year history – the anniversary of decimalisation.”

On February 15 1971, Britain began using decimal currency in a process that became known as “decimalisation”.

The transition, which took five years, saw the coinage system change from pounds, shillings and pence to a decimal currency, with a hundred units in a pound.

Speaking to Tv2000, Ms Ciuni said Prince William and Kate Middleton also stepped up to fill in some of Prince Charles.

She said: “The Queen, given her age, can continue to do this job mainly because she has a very strong family staff.

“Part of her office work is now done by Prince Charles, to whom the regency will go sooner or later.

“The role of Prince Charles has shifted to his son, William, and his wife. But she does everything else. This…allows her to continue doing everything she does morning, afternoon and evening.”
