Mr Johnson said of schools reopening: “I think one of the best things that has happened in the past couple of weeks is that parents, teachers, pupils have really risen to it.
“And the numbers I’m seeing are 99.9 percent of schools are now open, and we can build on that, and I think something like 89 percent of pupils are back in school, perhaps more in some places. That’s confidence in action.”
The Prime Minister added in his statement that schools would only close as an absolute last resort in the event of another national lockdown.
Professor of child health and outbreak medicine at the University of Liverpool, Calum Semple reiterated the idea that children are safer at school.
