Edward is the only one of the Queen’s children not to have got divorced which is understood to be a key reason why the Queen has a soft spot for his wife.
Speaking on the Queen’s fondness for her daughter-in-law, royal biographer and expert Robert Jobson said: “[The Countess] is probably the best example of an outsider coming into the family and learning on the job.
“She’s very much the Queen’s favourite, and you’ll notice that whenever there is a family holiday or gathering, Sophie and Edward often stay a while longer than the rest.”
While Sophie and Prince Edward do not have their own official Twitter account the Queen’s Royal Family account often promotes their work.
