Sophie, Countess of Wessex, 55, sent an emotional message of condolence to the President of the Republic of Lebanon on Thursday as the country is in mourning. The Countess’s message came after a horrific explosion killed at least 157 and injured 5,000 in the country’s capital Beirut.
The catastrophic explosion is believed to have stemmed from a warehouse in the Port of Beirut in which 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate were being stored unsafely.
An initial fire near the warehouse is understood to have led to the colossal explosion that was seen and felt across the city on Tuesday.
Search and rescue teams continued to look for survivors in the rubble on Friday.
Sophie, Countess of Wessex joined Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall in offering her condolences to those affected by the tragedy.
