Her campaign is backed by leading leisure organisations and includes a dedicated summer job section on the free-to-use Government jobs site Find A Job, to make it easier for people to search over 20,000 seasonal vacancies across the country.

Ms McVey said: “Getting a summer job is the perfect way to earn some money and develop employment skills.

“Saturday jobs and part-time employment for students has dropped drastically in the past 20 years and employers tell me it makes all the difference when young people are work-ready, and we want to support them to do just that.

“By getting even shortterm work, young people can build important practical skills to help them stand out from the crowd – and the job might even get them in front of their future boss.”

Lizzie Crowley, a skills adviser at the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, welcomed Ms Mcvey’s announcement and the campaign.

“I think it is absolutely essential that young people gain experience in the world of work whilst learning,” she told the Press Association.
