The Government brought the whole of the UK under lockdown on March 23 as the number of coronavirus cases in Britain began to grow. Since then, many of us having been working from home. And despite the lockdown restrictions having been partially lifted in recent weeks, there are still plenty of us choosing not to return to the office.

For many, the lockdown came at a cost – having sunk thousands into a train travel card that you’ve not been able to use.

But thankfully, the Government stepped in and insisted customers be refunded.

This means any National Rail travelcard or ticket that hasn’t been used after March 23 will be refunded.

But, you must claim now before the impending deadline.

Though be warned, you cannot claim all the way back to March 23, but instead just for the last eight weeks that you have not used the ticket for.

Any National Rail off-peak, anytime and advance tickets bought before 7am on March 23, 2020 are also refundable.

You can also change any anytime and advance tickets purchased after lockdown without incurring the usual £10 admin fee before September 7.

But advance tickets booked after March 23 are non-refundable, unless disruption to your booked journey means you do not travel.

Transport for London (TfL) is not part of the UK Government scheme, however.

So if you would like to claim back any cash, you need to apply within eight weeks of your last journey on that ticket.

TfL has said it will waive its £5 admin charge if you request a refund on an unused travel card.

To apply call TFL on 0343 222 1234 (call charges may apply).
